Breakfast

For those that know me, you know I'm not a morning person. So pancakes for breakfast is a rare treat for the kids. I will on occasion make them pancakes for lunch but my making breakfast is something special.

As I read through some posts on the homeschooling list I'm on, I was struck by a few off-handed comments about the time these people got up. They were mentioning that they didn't get up at 5:30 but *gasp* 7:30. Okay I'm gonna let you in on a secret, I don't normally get up until way after 8, sometimes as late as 9. That's right I like to sleep in the morning. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to get up early but I can't do it. Well I can and do on those Sundays we go to church, in fact I don't get up in the morning but the middle of the night, 4:30. But I spend the rest of the day feeling off and grumpy.

So yep, I'm a bad mom who makes her kids fend for themselves for breakfast normally. I like to get school started by 11, if I'm lucky, and my house is always a mess because of how small it is.

Oh and just in case you are thinking that I get points for making pancakes from scratch this morning, I admit that those are Bisquick pancakes.

I *plan* to start school at 8 each morning. We usually don't. I'm so glad my daughter is old enough and tall enough to get breakfast for herself and her brother these days!

M-W-and F mornings I make more effort to get up and eat breakfast with the family as that is the only meal we have as a family on those days.

All right, there, you! The reason I get up at 7:30 is not because that's what I want. But I've got a husband who thinks it is morally superior to be up at 5:00 or 5:30. I'd just as soon be getting up when you are, but because of my husband's needs, I can't run the house on my schedule. He can grit his teeth and bear with the fact that I get up "as late as" 7:30. And I can really stretch myself by planning on arising at 7:30, but that is the absolute earliest I can go on a regular basis. So don't let me make you feel bad. We often start school after dinner, like at 2:30. So you've got us beat by a long shot there.

We're right there with you! I get up anywhere between 7:30 and 9:00 am, frequently much closer to the latter than the former. Austin and Aislin get up when I tell them it's time. And then that OTHER child, who takes after her father, thinks it's fun to get up at 6...

We do make our pancakes from scratch these days. BUT, we consider them a lunch food. (Unless, of course, Alex makes them. And then we don't mind her early rising so much!)

I am up anywhere from 5:30 on but that is because I can't sleep -- not because I am not tired. I envy you being able to sleep until 9. That was in my first life, before I had Nick. Theo used to sleep until 9 and so did I. Nick was up with the sun when he was a baby so I got up too. I never have been able to get back to sleeping in. When I awake at 4 am, I will read a little and then go back to sleep.

I should say the reason we started this schedule is because Paul was working 2 jobs and getting home late. The only way the kids would have any time with him is if they stayed up too. Since he's doing that again now this schedule just works for us. The kids do their best work in the late morning/early afternoon so school goes more quickly too.

Barb- I've always slept a lot, right now I average 9 to 10 hours a night. In a way I wish I could function on less, I might actually get more done!
