Nourishing Traditions

I've heard so much about this book that I was excited when my request at the library was finally filled (yes I'm still using the library but sparingly and never in town, we send everything for pickup at a more friendly branch).

I'm so disappointed. I keep reading this stuff and thinking who can eat like this! We just don't have any of this stuff available and even if we did it would be way out of our price range. Everything we eat is on one of the pages that says how bad this stuff is for you. We eat processed everything, white everything, and refined sugar. Even the veggies and legumes we eat are not organic and full of pesticides and thus not great.

At this point I'm ready to send the book back. Since it's not a matter of just changing some stuff but literally everything, I don't even want to try. I figure if we are gonna die because our diet is so bad we may as well live it up and enjoy those things we love. Bring on the Diet Pepsi, margaritas, and chocolate!

Welcome to healthy food purgatory, where it doesn't matter what you do, it is *never* enough. :-)

I know what you mean, and I've said and thought those same words time and time again. Remember this while drinking your Coke (sorry, I'd rather do without than drink diet), God is the sustainer of all life. He even keeps those in far away countries alive without all those foods in that book. And know that there are those of us living with you in health purgatory eating what we can where we are.

When I got that book from the library I was so relieved that I hadn't ordered it from amazon. I had heard so much about it and figured it must be something I would like too from everything I heard. I think I took the- how to make your own margarine recipe and took it back to the library. I would have to take quite a few steps in the more healthy eating direction before I used that book. That seemed like step 10 while we may be on a step 5! We like the five a day different colors of fruits and veggies and try to not have much high fructose corn syrup. I will drink diet pepsi until I die probably.

This may give you some comfort. My grandparents have eaten white store bread and white sugar every day of their lives. They do have freash veggies in the summer from their garden (ND) but other wise it is canned. They are in their late 80's and still put in a garden this year. As grandma would say "that is why we pray before we eat."

Kim, please know you are not alone! We are trying to make some healthier choices but there is only so much one can do! And you are so right about the expense. That's a major limiting factor for us. Not to mention time. I have previously posted on my blog what we are trying to do, so I won't rehash it here, but let me just say that I appreciate your frankness. You put into words what many of us feel! (My dh is the impetus behind our efforts at a healthier diet, and sometimes when he comes in with a new project I just want to crawl in a corner and hide!)

Thanks everyone!

I struggle to get 2 servings daily of fruits or veggies in our diet so this is probably why I got so frustrated. I guess I was hoping for a book that encourages healthier eating using what you can buy at a regular market on a conservative budget. Maybe I'll just stick to making our bread (even if it's white) and work on increasing our intake of fruits and veggies (even if they are store-bought and laden with bad chemicals) :)
